The Met Gala is happening again. There is really going to be a Met Gala 2026.

I know. I know. But every year I wait for the moment when someone in that room pauses on the stairs, looks around, and asks whether any of this still makes sense. Every year, the stairs fill anyway. The cameras go off. The machinery turns.

What I’ve finally accepted: the machinery doesn’t pause. That’s the whole point of it.

The Deal We Made

For decades, the Met Gala worked because we held up our end of a bargain we never consciously signed.

We watched the red carpet. We debated the looks. We treated fashion as culture and glamour as aspiration. We let ourselves believe, at some half-lit level, that if we studied this world closely enough, it might eventually open for us.

That belief was the engine. Our attention was the fuel.

Without us, it’s a very expensive private dinner where people wear costumes. The fantasy was never about what was happening in the room. It was about what we were doing outside it — watching, wanting, amplifying, making it mean something. That’s what made it real.

And now the deal is off. Not renegotiated. Off.

We know how it works. You can’t unknow that.

The Purchase

When Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez step in as lead sponsors and honorary chairs, there’s no pretense left to maintain.

Cultural legitimacy is the final frontier for capital — the one thing you can’t just buy directly, the one domain where money historically had to work a little harder. And now it’s being purchased outright, in the most visible room available, with a check and a seat at the table.

There was a time when fashion houses anchored this event. There was at least a story about craft, about design, about artistic direction — a story that could justify why we were all paying attention. That story is gone. What remains is pure positioning. Influence consolidating itself in front of cameras because influence requires witnesses.

This isn’t a gala. It’s a transaction. They’re buying your gaze and calling it culture.

What the Numbers Actually Say

Tickets are $100,000. Tables are $350,000. Guests have to be personally invited for the privilege of paying.

Last year, the event raised over $30 million.

People will cite that figure as justification, as if scale alone confers meaning. It doesn’t. What that number actually reveals is how much capital can circulate inside a closed loop when attention is guaranteed — when enough of us are watching that relevance becomes self-sustaining.

That $30 million exists because we watch.

Because we share.

Because we’ve trained ourselves to treat their gatherings as news.

Who’s Actually in the Room

Outside the museum, the story looks different.

The infrastructure behind this spectacle runs on workers who can’t take bathroom breaks, employees monitored by productivity algorithms, and systems engineered for extraction at scale. The people moving packages, absorbing the pressure of same-day delivery, covering shifts so quarterly numbers hold — they are far more connected to this event than anyone ascending those stairs.

They built the conditions for this wealth.

They are not in the room.

This is not an accident. It is the architecture.

The Gap Is Not Symbolic - It’s Us

There’s a deeper problem here, and it lives beyond economics.

While this event unfolds, communities are being destabilized in concrete, measurable ways. Black communities in particular are facing targeted unemployment, political erosion, and systematic displacement that don’t make it onto any red carpet. The gap between what’s happening inside that building and what’s happening outside it isn’t a metaphor. It’s structural. It’s ongoing.

And still, the expectation is that we engage as if this is benign — as if watching is neutral, as if attention has no cost.

It isn’t benign. It never was. But now the gap is wide enough that engagement starts to feel like endorsement.

Versailles Had Filthy, Good Parties Too

At a certain point, excess stops being aspirational and starts being disorienting. There’s something genuinely strange about a room designed for display — beautiful, expensive, elaborately costumed display — when the people watching it are navigating real instability.

Its garishness hides a filthy side. Behind the polish of Versailles, was piss. Lots of it. Guests would relieve themselves wherever they were – over tower walls, in the hallway. It reminds me of the slippery sludge that housekeepers cited following P. Diddy’s parties.

See, because behind all that opulence, all that capitalism, all that more and more – while people give up. End their lives. Allow the machines to chew them up. There is shit. And vomit. And pills. And Versailles levels of piss.

The Versailles comparison keeps surfacing in these conversations, and not without reason. History is pretty consistent on what happens when the visible distance between the elite and everyone else becomes too vast, when spectacle starts to read less like aspiration and more like indifference.

It becomes revolting. And the more revolting the excess becomes, the closer to revolt the people are.

Indifference, displayed this openly and this repeatedly, accumulates. It has consequences. Horrible ones, that none of us want.

Even the Insiders Are Stepping Back

Not everyone is playing along.

Meryl Streep and others have reportedly declined involvement. Zohran Mamdani, running for office in New York, has made clear his priorities don’t include attendance.

These aren’t coincidences. They’re signs from inside the system — from people who understand its mechanics and have decided not to be glaring gluttons. When those who benefit most from a structure start opting out, that tells you something about where the structure is headed.

The question is whether we’re paying attention to the signal.

What It Was Really Selling

The Met Gala was never just about fashion.

It sold orientation.

It trained us to look upward. To treat their gatherings as culturally significant events rather than private ones. It made their excess feel relevant to our lives — not as something to resent, but as something to study, to aspire toward, to follow closely enough that we might one day understand it from the inside.

We were the audience for a life we were never meant to live.

And we paid for that access with our attention, our time, our clicks, our genuine emotional investment in how someone was dressed on stairs we will never climb.

There Is No Reform Here

This is the part where I’m supposed to suggest the event could be different. More inclusive, perhaps. Better themed. More accountable.

I’m not going to do that.

The structure is the point. The exclusion is the point. The excess is the point. Reforming those things wouldn’t produce a better Met Gala — it would produce a different event entirely, and it would not be funded by the people currently funding this one.

So, the response must be equally clear.

Not outrage. Outrage keeps you watching. Not commentary. Commentary keeps you engaged.

Withdrawal.

The One Thing They Can’t Buy

They can fund the event themselves. They already do.

Tickets, tables, sponsorships — the money is there. It has always been there. Capital is not their problem.

What capital cannot manufacture is relevance without participation. The spectacle only works if we’re watching. Relevance requires an audience. Cultural weight requires people who treat something as culturally weighty.

That part? That part is ours.

Remove the Gaze

We cancel the Met Gala the only way that actually works.

Not by petitioning Anna Wintour. Not by writing the thread about the theme. Not by debating whether the looks delivered.

By removing our gaze.

By spending that attention — that same energy, that same Tuesday night curiosity — on the world we’re actually trying to build.

The fantasy served a function once. Maybe it was innocent, maybe it was always more complicated than that. Either way, it’s over now.

Let it be over.
